ATEX and EX-rated equipment for petrol handling

Petrol (ULP) is classified as a Class 3 flammable liquid. Every product on this page carries the appropriate hazardous area certification for safe petrol transfer and dispensing — ATEX, IECEx, or equivalent explosion-proof ratings.

Never use diesel equipment for petrol

Standard diesel pumps, meters, and nozzles are NOT safe for petrol. Petrol vapour is heavier than air and highly flammable — any electrical component in the transfer circuit must be intrinsically safe or explosion-proof to prevent ignition.

Tanks must be petrol-rated too

Self-bunded tanks storing petrol require flame arrestor venting, EX-rated electrical components, and specific material compatibility. Not all tank models in each range are petrol-approved — confirm with our team before ordering.

Common Questions

Why can't I use my diesel pump for petrol?

Diesel pumps use standard electric motors that can generate sparks. Petrol vapour is flammable at room temperature — a spark from a non-EX-rated motor can cause ignition. Petrol pumps use intrinsically safe or explosion-proof motors certified to ATEX/IECEx standards.

What does ATEX rated mean?

ATEX is the European directive for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX-rated equipment is designed and certified to prevent ignition of flammable gases or vapours. In Australia, IECEx certification is the equivalent standard. Both are accepted for petrol handling applications.

Can I store petrol in a GO BOX tank?

Yes, but only in petrol-rated variants. Petrol-rated GO BOX tanks include flame arrestor venting, EX-rated fittings, and appropriate material compatibility. Not all sizes are available in petrol configuration — contact us for current availability.
