How long can diesel be stored for backup generators?
With proper fuel quality management (desiccant breather, water-separation filter, sealed tank), diesel can be reliably stored for 6–12 months. Without these measures, water contamination and microbial growth can render stored diesel unusable within 3–6 months. For critical applications, we recommend annual fuel testing and polishing.
Can I install a fuel tank indoors?
Yes, with a UL2085 fire-rated tank. AS1940 Clause 5.6.2(c) permits indoor storage of diesel and petrol in fire-rated tanks. The FRL 240/240/240 rating halves the required separation distances compared to standard tanks, making indoor installation practical in basements and plant rooms.
What is a day tank controller?
A day tank controller (e.g., OLE T4000) automatically maintains the fuel level in a small day tank connected to the generator. When the day tank level drops, the controller activates a transfer pump to refill from bulk storage. This ensures the generator always has fuel without manual checking or filling.
