Why tank gauges matter in fuel management

Accurate level measurement prevents dry deliveries, flags leaks early and feeds inventory systems. Fuel depots use gauges to schedule tanker refills. Mining sites track diesel consumption across multiple tanks. Transport yards monitor AdBlue levels to avoid vehicle downtime. Mechanical float gauges give local readings at the tank. Electronic sensors send 4-20mA or digital signals to controllers, SCADA or cloud platforms. Hydrostatic probes suit tall vertical tanks. Magnetostrictive senders handle high accuracy in underground installations. Ultrasonic sensors measure without contacting the fuel.

Mechanical float gauges

Float arm drives a dial or digital display at the tank top. Common on farm diesel tanks, workshop bulk storage and portable refuelling trailers. No external power required for basic models. Some add 4-20mA output for remote monitoring. Simple to install, reliable in temperatures from -20°C to +60°C. Suits clean diesel, petrol, AdBlue and hydraulic oil. Maximum span typically 3 metres.

Hydrostatic and magnetostrictive probes

Hydrostatic probes measure pressure at the tank bottom to calculate level. Good for tall vertical tanks where float swing is impractical. Magnetostrictive senders use a float sliding on a probe rod; pulse timing gives millimetre accuracy. Common in service station underground tanks for compliance with environmental regulations. Both output 4-20mA, pulse or Modbus. Intrinsically safe versions available for Class I Division 1 hazardous areas.

Ultrasonic and cloud-connected sensors

Ultrasonic sensors mount on the tank top and measure distance to the fuel surface. Non-contact, so no moving parts in the liquid. Suits AdBlue, oils and chemicals that foul floats. Some models include cellular modem for cloud telemetry; you check levels and set alarms from a phone app. Battery or solar powered options for remote tanks without mains power. Typical range 5 metres, accuracy ±3 mm.

Common Questions

What's the difference between a float gauge and a hydrostatic probe?

Float gauges use a buoyant arm that swings with level changes; good for shallow tanks and local display. Hydrostatic probes measure liquid pressure at the tank bottom; better for tall vertical tanks and electronic output. Floats are simpler and cheaper. Probes give consistent accuracy over the full range.

Can I retrofit a 4-20mA output to an existing float gauge?

Some float gauge models offer add-on transmitter modules. If your current gauge has a rotary shaft, you can often clamp a potentiometer or encoder to it. Otherwise, replacing the entire sender is cleaner. Send us a photo of your existing gauge and we'll confirm compatibility.

Do cloud gauges need a SIM card?

Most cloud-connected gauges include a built-in cellular modem with SIM already installed. Subscription fee covers data and cloud hosting. A few models support BYO SIM if you have a bulk IoT plan. Check the spec sheet or ask us which option each model uses.

What accuracy do I need for compliance reporting?

Environmental regulations for service station underground tanks typically require ±3 mm or better, which means magnetostrictive or high-spec ultrasonic. Bulk diesel depots can usually work with ±10 mm from a good hydrostatic probe. Workshop and farm tanks have no mandated accuracy; float gauges reading ±2% are adequate for reorder triggers.
